Newcastle captain Jamal Lascelles on links with Chelsea

According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle captain Jamal Lascelles has today suggested his long-term future lies at Newcastle United. Even though Chelsea and a number of other clubs are rumoured to be interested in him.

A great 2017/18 season for Newcastle

When Newcastle United won promotion to the Premier League in 2016/17, many people believed they would struggle to stay up due to the lack of money spent on their squad.

On the surface, Newcastle do not exactly seem blessed with top Premier League talents. However, Rafa Benitez was able to guide what is quite an average Newcastle side to a 10th place finish in the Premier League.

A big part of why Newcastle were able to finish so high in the table was due to the performances of club captain Jamal Lascelles.

Lascelles was a rock at the back for Newcastle and was unlucky to miss out on a World Cup place this summer. However, despite missing out on Russia, Lascelles does seem to be enjoying his football at the moment.

‘The happiest I’ve been’

In an interview with Chronicle Live Lascelles talks in detail about the speculation surrounding his future and his happiness at Newcastle United.

“This is the happiest I’ve been.

“I’m playing week in, week out. And I’m the captain here, the fans love me, and I’ve got a good relationship with them because I love them. And we’re doing well, too.

“I’m very happy here. You hear things, you hear rumours and stuff, but I’m a young player and I need to be playing football at a good club – and that’s what this is.

“Overall it’s been an unreal season as far as I’m concerned, both for me personally, and more importantly for the club.

“This is the right club for me at the right time.

“We have a huge fanbase, an amazing manager, and this club is massive. It has so much history.

“As captain, I want to see how far we can go – and potentially take it back to where it belongs.”

So, while Chelsea may be keen to add a bright young talent such as Lascelles to their ranks, it is unlikely the Newcastle defender will be heading off to Stamford Bridge anytime soon.
