Xabi Alonso previews Real Madrid vs Liverpool

In a sit-down interview with Liverpool FC earlier today Liverpool and Spain legend Xabi Alonso gave his thoughts on Liverpool’s chances of winning the Champions League this year.

Supposedly, Alonso has believed since last summer that Liverpool would be capable of winning the Champions League this season. He told Liverpool that,

“With this team, from the beginning I had the feeling that they could beat anyone, that in any game anything could happen, especially at Anfield [where] they were so strong.

“You could see that Anfield was rocking in the European nights and they had that feeling, that belief that they could make it.

“The games were thrilling, so exciting to play, so exciting to watch, and I had big confidence in what they have done. And now the final is the final – anything can happen.”

Liverpool’s road to the final

Whether or not you believe Alonso that he knew as far back as last summer Liverpool could win the Champions League, the fact is Liverpool are now just one game away from getting their hands on their first Champions League trophy since 2005.

Liverpool topped their Champions’ League group finishing above Sevilla, Spartak Moscow and Maribor.

They would then go on to beat Porto, Manchester City and Roma in the proceeding knockout rounds to earn themselves a place in the final.

Real Madrid’s road to the final

Madrid, on the other hand, are looking to lift the trophy for the third year in a row.

Zidane’s men had a much harder group than Liverpool. They faced Spurs, Dortmund and APOEL in Group H. In which they finished second.

They would then go on to beat PSG, Juventus and Bayern Munich in the knockout rounds. Once again, this was arguably a much harder road to the final for Madrid and as a result, they may be slightly more prepared than Liverpool.

However, only time will tell if Alonso’s supposed prediction will come to fruition.
