Sarri to Chelsea? Carlo Ancelotti ‘could take over at Napoli tonight’

According to reports in the Italian media tonight, Carlo Ancelotti is set to replace rumoured Chelsea target Maurizio Sarri at Napoli imminently.

Second best

Napoli played out their final fixture of the season on Sunday, with the Partenopei having picked up a 2-1 win over Crotone to finish the campaign with a hugely-impressive Serie A points tally of 91.

However, unfortunately for the Neapolitans, this tally did not quite get the job done in the Italian top-flight, as perennial champions Juventus racked up an incredible 95 points to clinch their 7th-straight Scudetto crown.

Overhaul?

In the wake of falling short once again in the Serie A title race, rumours have been rife in the media that major changes could be in store for Napoli this summer.

The likes of Jorginho, Marek Hamsik and Dries Mertens have all been linked with exits from the San Paolo, while mounting question marks have surrounded the future of manager Maurizio Sarri.

‘Too late’

The two clubs most heavily touted as potential destinations for Sarri have been Premier League giants Chelsea and Arsenal (the latter now look set to appoint Unai Emery), though the likes of Monaco and Zenit St. Petersburg have also been linked with the chain-smoking Italian.

Whatever the case may be, the possibility of Sarri remaining at Napoli dropped considerably on Sunday evening, when Partenopei president Aurelio De Laurentiis answered questions on the future of his side’s manager during an interview with Radio Kiss Kiss:

‘Maurizio Sarri’s future? You will have to ask him. He never wanted to give me an answer and his agent always said maybe. For me it is now too late since we have to move on with our plan. We have to move on and think about the future.’

Done deal?

And, as per a huge update courtesy of Neapolitan outlet CalcioNapoli24 this evening, it looks as though Sarri’s time at the San Paolo could even be set to come to an end over the next 24 hours, amid claims that Carlo Ancelotti is on the verge of putting pen to paper on a deal with the Serie A runners-up.

In fact, so sure are CalcioNapoli of Ancelotti’s imminent appointment at the San Paolo, that they have gone as far as to claim that both the former Bayern Munich boss and Aurelio De Laurentiis requested that their lawyers meet tonight to draw up contracts that could in turn be signed off on over the coming hours.

If Ancelotti does, as expected, commit to a deal with Napoli, then Maurizio Sarri would in turn be free to replace Antonio Conte at Chelsea.

However, some reports have stated that Sarri could even take a year off from management.
