Unai Emery prepares to take over at Arsenal

Over the weekend, according to reports, Mikel Arteta was planning his backroom staff to take over at Arsenal.

In the end, Arteta got usurped for the Arsenal job and is now expected to receive a new contract at Manchester City. With the Premier League champions keen to have Arteta as the manager-in-waiting for if Pep Guardiola leaves the club.

So, for the second time this week, another manager is preparing his backroom staff to take over at Arsenal, but this time it does look like Unai Emery will get the job.

On Tuesday night, Emery’s personal website announced he had secured the Arsenal job. Currently, Emery’s site is now bringing up a 404 message.

Nevertheless, Emery is expected to be announced this week, or early next week, as the new Arsenal manager.

On Wednesday, Matt Hughes reports in The Times that Emery is planning to bring with him four senior coaches to The Emirates.

Hughes writes: “The newcomers are expected to be Juan Carlos Carcedo (assistant coach), Pablo Villanueva (technical coach), Julen Masach (fitness coach) and Victor Manas (video analyst), completing a dramatic overhaul of Arsenal’s technical staff over the past 12 months.”

Hughes also points out just how highly regarded Emery is right now by the Arsenal hierarchy:

“In an indication of Arsenal’s determination to demonstrate their backing for Emery, the club have offered him a deal that is expected to be longer than any signed by Wenger. Ironically, given that he spent 22 years at Arsenal, the Frenchman never signed a contract for longer than three years and made a habit of renewing as he entered the final year.”

It is far from clear whether Arsene Wenger’s assistant Steve Bould will remain at the club. Invincibles goalkeeper Jens Lehmann is expected to be kept on as goalkeeping coach.
